      Course description
  • This course focuses on the PCI-X Addendum to the PCI Local Bus Specification and provides a detailed investigation into the operation of the PCI-X LogiCORE. Explaining the basic principals and concepts introduced by the PCI-X Addendum, this course is also intended to provide an in-depth understanding of the PCI-X LogiCORE and how a digital designer may interface this to a typical user application to create a flexible PCI-X solution.

  Course Objectives
  • This training course introduces engineers to the PCI-X Specification and helps accelerate the design process to provide shorter time-to-market for designers implementing a flexible PCI-X solution using the Xilinx PCI-X LogiCORE.

After completing this training, you will be able to :

  • Identify differences between PCI and PCI-X
  • Describe the basics of the PCI-X Specification
  • Describe the basic Xilinx PCI-X Design Flow
  • Identify LogiCORE signals
  • Understand the behavior of the PCI-X LogiCORE and how to interface it to a typical user application
  • Design a user application that can accommodate operation in both conventional PCI and PCI-X mode

TRAINING OUTLINE

Day 1

  • Differences between PCI and PCI-X
  • PCI-X Local Bus Architecture
  • PCI-X Signals and Terminology
  • Protocol Rules
  • PCI-X Transactions
  • Error Handling
  • Device Configuration
  • Electrical Characteristics
  • The Xilinx PCI-X Solution

Day 2

  • Overview of PCI-X LogiCORE
  • Interfacing Buffers
  • Designing Target Engine
  • Designing Initiator Engine
  • Handling Configuration Transactions
  • Standard PCI Considerations

LAB DESCRIPTION

  • Customers will examine typical transactions of a Target and Initiator. The lab will detail important concepts of typical transactions.
  • Building on Lab 1, Lab 2 is an additional lab where the students design for termination considerations. An alternate stimulus file will provide the termination conditions for which the user application may respond.

    Documentation

Training manuals will be given to participants during training. Precise and easy of use, those notes can be used as a reference afterwards.
